Choosing Your Plastic Surgeon

Ensure the doctor is licensed

Ensure the doctor is licensed. Just as all medical doctors must have a license to treat people, a plastic surgeon must also be licensed.

This requires them to have obtained education in medical care and passed the licensing criteria established by your state. You can check if they are licensed by contacting your state health department.

Learn about the experience and specialties of the physician. Most cosmetic surgeons make information about themselves and their practice available to patients.

This allows you to determine how long the doctor has been practicing as well as what they specialize in. Some cosmetic physicians specialize in facelifts, while others are more knowledgeable and experienced providing breast enhancements.

By knowing what their experience and specialty is, you can choose a cosmetic surgeon that specializes in your specific area of plastic surgery. Determine if any malpractice lawsuits have been filed.

When checking to determine if your plastic physician is licensed, it is also ideal to check and see if they have had any complaints or lawsuits filed against him. Most states to make this information available to the public.

Consult with the doctor and make sure all your questions are answered. Finally it is important to talk to the physician you are interested in using and make sure they are a good fit for you.

During your initial consultation, you should have all your questions answered as well as develop a sense of comfort and ease around your surgeon. If after your initial appointment you have any doubts about your cosmetic surgery or the actual physician you will be using, you may want to seek out the services or opinion of another doctor.

There is only one board of true Plastic Surgeons, and this is The American Board of Plastic Surgery. If your physician is not a member of this board, he or she has not passed the rigorous requirements and testing that the board requires for patient.

If your surgeon says they are board certified, ask "with which board?" There are other boards in existence that are not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and may have no requirements for membership.

A doctor may say that he is "board certified" but may have simply sent in membership fees to obtain that certificate. Many types of doctors like Obstetricians, Dermatologists, Family Practice doctors, Ear Nose and Throat doctors may say that they are "cosmetic surgeons".

They are not; however, cosmetic physicians and a patient should investigate this. Contact the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Only plastic doctors who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have been in practice for a period of time and have demonstrated patient care and safety may be admitted to this society. A doctor who is member of this society is a bone fide cosmetic physician with a record of safety.

Talk with friends and family. Even a legitimate plastic surgeon who has genuine board certification may not be someone who you might want operating on you.

Check with people who you know and trust that have had interaction with the physician. Interview the physician yourself. It is a good idea to consult with at least three before making your decision.

You should feel comfortable with the surgeon, as well as his office. If complications occur you will want to feel comfortable dealing with the people charged with taking care of you.

Keep an eye out for coupons on every doctor's website, and if you see one, run away. Many, but not all, plastic surgeons have seen a downturn in the volume of their surgical practice that coincides with the overall economic downturn.

Discounting the value of professional services, especially surgery, is not good marketing. Instead it is a sign of desperation.

The best cosmetic physicians are still busy in this contracting economy, and they are not discounting their fees. At the same time, the most expensive physician is not necessarily the most talented, so as a consumer you still have to research this carefully.
