A Bonsai pot is a very very important part of your tree. It serves two roles - to improve and add to the viewing experience of your tree (aka to make it look better) and also to help shape the tree's height. Hmm, two reasons, one artistic and one practical. Let's have a look at both.

The most important practical element of your pot is that it influences how big the root network can become. Of course, the larger the Bonsai pot, the larger the roots can become... and the smaller the pot, the smaller the roots will be forced to grow. You will find that the size of the pot dramatically influences the size of the tree. If the tree can spread out then it will grow as big as it can! Keeping the tree in a smaller pot will keep the tree smaller.

Another practical element is that you need to make sure that the pot has got proper drainage to enable the excess water to drain out. A common mistake that beginners make is to choose a pot that looks nice and is perhaps the right size but it has no holes. If then you over water your plant you will sit the roots in water and they will rot. And die. Always choose a pot with holes in the bottom, or drill some yourself if necessary. About three will usually do it, arranged in a pyramid type shape. If you are going to be displaying your Bonsai indoors (or even outdoors) you may want to put your pot on a tray to make things even better. This will stop water draining away everywhere.

When it comes to the design and the colour of the pots that you are choosing then it comes down to a personal preference. Remember that the pot design is there to augment the tree though... it shouldn't attract the eye easily. Muted colours like light greens and grays are good for this sort of thing, and if you've got a flowering Bonsai you might want a lighter orange or light pink. Think pastel.

As I said though - it's your choice. Bonsai is Asian in origin and it's a very 'minimalist' sort of art. I would choose something very simple, but very beautiful. You could even make your own if you have knowledge in this sort of area.

A Bonsai pot is an essential part of creating beautiful Bonsai trees. They both physically change the appearance of the tree as well as add something to the overall image. It's an important thing to buy, so put more time into it then you budget for. It'll be worth it when your Bonsai is display worthy.
