More and more internet users are becoming familiar with blogs today

. People use blogs to promote their products or companies, to provide information, to stay in touch with one another and to host discussions. A large portion of internet users either maintains a blog or reads a blog regularly. If you are thinking of starting a blog, take a little time to think about the features you would like.

To decide how to set up your blog, first consider the purpose of your site. Are you using a blog to promote your business? Are you using a blog to provide updates about events to family and friends? Do you want a springboard for discussions? These are all important considerations, because they will help determine the best format for your blog. Some layouts are more effective for certain purposes than others.

There are many different formats available to use. It is important to remember that several different formats could potentially work for you, so check out some different options to see what suits you best.

The following are some features you may want to consider. If you are writing to keep others updated about events or to share your thoughts, you may or may not want to allow comments. Some of these sites, such as those set up for medical updates, like CaringBridge.com, function without having a direct comment section but do have guest book pages where other can write. Others allow you to post an article then have others sign in and post comments that you can moderate. If you are using your blog as a discussion board, there are a couple different formats for that as well. Some blogs about television shows do not have a main thread but function as a running list of pages with comments by visitors. You, the blog owner, set up the forum and can moderate comments, but the blog consists of only discussions. A relatively common layout for blogs is available on sites such as Blogspot.com, where you, the owner and moderator of the blog, will post a thread or an article and choose whether or not to allow posts by others to discuss that thread.

The difference between a blog and a website is that a blog usually does consist of some type of discussion or at least the thoughts of the owner. A blog can be anything from a page of daily thoughts so that it functions as one person's journal that is available to others to a discussion forum of multiple visitors voicing their thoughts.

Fortunately, most of these layouts are free to set up. All you need to do is decide what you which format best suits your needs, register with the site and spread the word. Once you gain viewership and others begin to take an interest in the discussion material, the word will spread and your blog should take off.

I also highly recommend you use wordpress for your blog platform. It allows for the most functionality and customization.

Of course where you go with your blog is up to you. By learning some internet marketing tips you can then find ways to monetize the blog, making it pay for itself but also, possibly, generating a nice income.
