The festivities are upon us, and it just about time for us to start trimming the tree, making the decks and cooking the Christmas cake. But if your Christmas tree isn't properly cared for, it can be hazardous for your family.

If you favour a real tree in your home, make sure that you have a good look at the needles when you are purchasing. If the needles are brown or they break easily then choose another one, as the tree isn't that fresh.

When you get your tree home put it in a sturdy stand and fill it with water. It is obvious that you should put your Christmas tree at least three feet away from flames or heat, but make sure you keep it watered as a dry tree could catch on fire far easier.

Never put candles on the tree, and put it near an electrical outlet so you don't have to stretch cables to power the lights.

Make sure that all the lights are safe. If the cables are slightly frayed you should replace the lights as this is a fire hazard. Make sure that when there is no one in the room, the lights on the Christmas tree are turned off. Real trees are a large fire hazard in the festive period, and its best to err on the side of caution.

Make sure that the fire extinguishers are working, and that your family know what to do in the case of a fire.
