Adding particle streams to Cinema4D is quite easy. Click the 'emitter object thumbnail' menu and choose an emitter type.Getting started, you might simply choose the emitter. Emitters add a special dimension to animation, add a special dimension to any story.
Does your story have fire, or smoke, or wind, or magic rays? You will need particles. Once you define an emitter, play for a little bit. See the particles appear across the timeline, then increase the birthrate to see more particles. Create the seed value to see more particles 'out of the shoot'. This is one of the easiest Cinema4D effects to see immediate results by just adjusting some values. You can control your particle stream with a 'start emission' 'stop emission' value where you enter a frame value for the timeline. For example, have your wind appear on frame 40 and fade away at frame 200.
You will see values for speed, lifetime, scale, and rotation and each of these have a variation percentage setting where you can use rotation, for example, then have C4D varies the value you've chose to make the stream a little more interesting. When a particle stream varies, it almost certainly comes closer to imitating life where our smoke and haze and martian laser beam rays do indeed vary in their behavior.
The next parameter you will want to set is 'Show Objects', a simple check-box. This lets your populate your stream with a shape of your own choice. Is your particle stream specks of dust in a whirlwind or magnetic particles drawn by the illuminated space ship flying by? Being able to define the shapes that indeed are your particles will make them more realistic.
When you look at some of the other emitter objects, they are not particle emitters but 'helper objects' such as 'wind' or 'deflector', 'turbulence'. These 'helper objects' will help you control and groom the behavior of your particles to look like the natural effects we know and associate with streams.
These emitter objects come with some very useful controls of their own. They essentially have the very same parameters to adjust like 'Fallof' which lets the path and momentum of the stream trail off. There is a shape variable for your control objects. This doesn't replace the shape of the particles but rather, the shape of the influence you are modifying. For example you may use a cone shape with a wind control object being used to create a tornado. You might use a sphere shape for a particle stream moving through a magnetic field.
So much of the motion and activity in our life creates or belongs to a particle stream of some kind. Nearly all of our natural effects are described with streams when it rains, when the sun shines, when a car whizzes by, when we see a shooting star. This is a great effect and a great tool to have in you
