Ciociaria: Various Proposals For The Tourism
Ciociaria is an area which corresponds to the province of Frosinone; here there are
numerous parks and natural reserves, such as the Regional Park of Monti Simbruni, the Reserve of the Lake Canterno, the National Reserve of Posta Fibreno, the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the mountain ranges of Ernici, Simbruni and Lepine. Ciociaria includes many cities in its district, for instance: Cassino, Ceprano, Pastena, Piglio, Fiuggi, Gallinaro, Veroli, and Viticuso.
It is a renowned and famous region for its medieval villages, spa and religious tourism, as well as for the winter ski resorts, and the nature trails situated between rivers, waterfalls, springs and lakes. Moreover, many famous people were born here, as Manuela Arcuri. These places are well known also for the cuisine, in particular in the Cesanese Piglio area the DOCG wine is produced. The Cesanese is a red grapevine which produces a ruby red wine, characterized by a tannic and soft taste, ideal both as a table and dessert wine. In 2006 the wine route Cesanese was found: a series of itineraries dedicated to the grapevine which curls along various towns between Rome and Frosinone.
Furthermore, Ciociaria offers diverse opportunities for the organization of a tour. First of all, there are huge walls that run throughout the Ciociaria, built with large blocks of stone during the pre-Roman times, with the aim of fortifying the cities, by forming a polygonal shape. There are also numerous Roman villas, the ruins remained in the cities of Fibreno and Priverno. Over the centuries, several temples dedicated to pagan gods have emerged. For example, in the place of the Temple of Apollo now stands the Abbey of Montecassino at 520 meters high, on the top of the mountain which is covered with olive trees, overlooking the town of Cassino. Among monasteries, churches and shrines there are: Agnani's Cathedral, Abbey of Fossanova in Casamari, Monastery of St. Scolastica, Valscivolo Abbey, Monastery of Trisulti in Collepardo built between 600 and 700 located at 800 meters high (a complex of roads, buildings, gardens and squares); the churches and the city gates, designed by Giovanni Subleyras in Alatri, Veroli and Boville date back to 800, and the elegant fountains of Alatri was designed by Olivieri. Consequently, there are plenty of opportunities for new routes in Ciociaria, by spending a weekend in one of the countries of the province of Frosinone, for example at Hotel Rocca in Cassino, which is a suitable place if you want to visit the Abbey of Montecassino.
In addition, it is important to remember that the territory of Ciociaria is divided into four districts: Velletri, Gaeta, Frosinone, Sora and Avezzano. It has been the sets of many films, among the most popular: La Ciociara, in 1960, directed by Vittorio De Sica, based on the homonymous book written by Alberto Moravia. In the film La Ciociara starred Sophia Loren, when she was only twenty-seven. She was Cesira, a young widow escaped the bombing of Rome during the Second World War, and she took refuge in her country of origin, in Ciociaria. The film won a lot of prizes: Premio Oscar, David di Donatello, Golden Globe and Nastro dargento.
