In the good old days, a circus was a world of adventures

, amusement and entertainment tightly packed within a big tent. Performers of all types including acrobats, clowns, tightrope walkers, stilt walkers, jugglers, fire breathers and lion tamers all performed with so much fervour keeping their little audiences spellbound throughout.

Circuses in the past were performed by travelling troupes. Nowadays there are firms to recruit and manage novice to veteran performers and organize tours within a region or even worldwide. Among the finest circuses in the world, the most popular are Cirque du Soleil of Quebec and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey declared as Americas Living National Treasure.

Cirque du Soleil or the Circus of the Sun is considered to be the greatest circus in the world in present times. It is a circus founded by two street performers namely Daniel Gauthier and Guy Laliberte in the city of Baie-Saint-Paul in Quebec. In the past Cirque du Soleil was known as Les chassiers. At one time to collect funds one of its members Ste-Croix performed an unbelievable feat, by stilt walking 90 kilometres from Baie-Saint-Paul to Quebec.

When Quebec celebrated their 450th anniversary of the Discovery of Canada, Les chassiers received a grant from the government. Then in 1984 they launched their pivotal grand show by the name Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil, marking the birth of a legendary circus.

As years passed Cirque du Soleil kept growing steadily. Successful tours spread their fame throughout the world. Starting from Canada they toured United States and from there to Europe and later travelled as far as Japan. Today Cirque du Soleil is not only involved in circus related performances. They even handle television productions besides managing sports ceremonies and cultural events as well as Academy Awards.

Each show is a thematic and dramatic presentation, taking the regular performing arts to the next generation. Some of these shows are performed on aquatic stages while some require more than 100 costumes made of diverse materials.

Some would include aerial acrobatics that would keep the audience gaping in awe. Moreover many shows are packed with great humour, where clowns are ever so ready to make you burst into laughter. There are also two kinds of shows, where one type is permanent based at a resort or a theme park while the other type tours across the world.

Presently altogether there are 4000 people working for Cirque du Soleil representing more than 40 countries. The number of people who have enjoyed this ultra high dose of entertainment reaches around 90 million people across the globe.
