Citizens of North Dakota defeat ranch hunting ban

The people of North Dakota voted on Nov. 2nd to keep open hunting ranches by a 57% margin. Ballot Measure 2 as it is known around North Dakota served the purpose of trying to regulate and close down privately owned hunting ranches across the state. The supporters of the measure were not just animal rights activists but also hunters quoting Teddy Roosevelt and the tradition of "fair chase" hunting. Some hunters are saying that it is unethical to hunt animals that don't have a chance to escape from their hunter.

I agree with both sides of this measure.

I feel that an animal born and raised in the wild should stay in the wild and if hunted they should have the chance to escape. The fair chase tradition was established to help protect and preserve wild animals not animals produced as a food source. If ranch owners are capturing wild animals and then putting them into fenced ranches for the purpose of hunting then they should be punished. But if a ranch owner is raising an animal on his land with the intention of hunting the animal for food then I don't have a problem with their actions.

I don't see the difference between a ranch owner who hunts the animals that he raised and a chicken farmer that hatches large quantities of chicks and keeps them cooped up in small, dark buildings their entire lives. At least the animals living on these private ranches have the opportunity to breathe fresh air and walk around and live some kind of life. In the end the animals raised on these ranches are nothing but a source of food no different from the chicken we feed our children to the bacon we put on our cheeseburgers. Hunting usually produces a more humane kill when compared to slaughter houses procedures where animals are transported for hundreds of miles in small cramped trailers only to be skinned while still alive. Hunters wait till an animal is dead to transport and skin how is this not more humane?

Another problem that I have with this measure is that it focuses on the selling of the hunt rights and not the killing of the captive animals. If the measure would have passed would slaughter houses be forced to close down? I think not. This is nothing but someone trying to put an end to someone else's way of life. I am proud of the people in North Dakota for rejecting this measure and keeping peoples rights intact. It seems as though the sponsor of the measure has also finally gotten the point that North Dakotans like their rights because he has stated that he won't be proposing the measure again.
