Cleaning Your Carpets
By the time the surface begins to look dirty, you know you that you have to deal with a lot of hidden dirt
. Here is what you need to do to wash your rug in a more effective way.
Vacuum your rugs at least once a week. Heavy traffic areas may require more frequent vacuuming.
Neglecting to vacuum often enough can shorten the life of your carpet as the build-up can potentially damage fibers by fraying them. Wash around baseboards and hard to reach areas every couple of weeks.
Do not be in a hurry when vacuuming, as you might not be able to remove deeply embedded dirt. Make sure to go over each section of flooring several times, from several different directions using a crisscross pattern and overlapping strokes.
Sprinkle your rug with baking soda or a commercial deodorizing product at least 15 minutes before you vacuum. Treat spots promptly, but spot test to make sure you are not damaging or fading your rug's dye or color when you use a cleaner.
When applying soil retardants to new floors, make sure you follow the manufacturers' advice. Use only professional equipment and the recommended application techniques.
If you have deep stains that cannot be removed with surface products you may need to spend some money to wash your floors. Purchase or rent a wet-cleaner machine also known as a steamer, at a hardware or grocery store if you need it to lift stains.
When you rent a machine, the necessary cleaning products are usually included or can be purchased at the rental store. Remove any furniture from the carpet that you want to wash.
Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Vacuum the floor to remove any excess dirt from the surface. This should also expose any hidden stains.
Spray heavily soiled areas with pre-spray or traffic-lane washer. For really dirty areas, increase the amount of pre-spray used instead of increasing the amount of floor shampoo.
Fill the machine's hose or reservoir with hot tap water and use the machine and rug shampoo according to the steamer manufacturer's instructions. Pre-treat carpet stains by spraying them with a rug spot treatment before running the machine over the floor.
Allowing the stain remover to work in for several minutes should help loosen up the contents of the stain, enabling for easier removal. Maximize the amount of water removed from the rug by making a water-extraction pass with the water spray on and then again with the spray off.
Test the floor with your hand. If your hand comes away with water droplets, extract again with the spray off.
If your hand comes away damp and the carpet feels wrung out, you have extracted correctly. Follow the directions on machine for adding cleaner and water.
Plug in the machine and turn it on when it is on the floor. Start using the machine by going in a back and forth motion over the rug.
Make sure to run the machine over the entire carpet, not just the soiled parts, otherwise you may see patches of cleaner carpet when it dries. You may want to run it multiple times over stained areas to ensure removal.
You will likely have to stop and empty out dirtied water and refill with fresh water and cleaner several times before finishing the entire rug. Make sure to note what the indicators for changing the water are by reading the instructions.
Stay out of the room until the rug is completely dry. You may choose to turn on a fan to speed up the drying process.
Look over the floor once it is dry and decide whether you want to re-run the machine. It can take more than one time to wash a floor if it is deeply soiled.
Re-run the machine or return it to the store if you are satisfied. Vacuuming does not always restore a carpet's fresh appearance.
For heavily soiled rugs, shampooing is recommended, rather than spot-cleaning. Wet-cleaner machines spray and remove hot detergent solution while cleaning the floor.
