Clep Makes College Possible For The Financially Struggling

Lets face it: we are in some very tough economic times

. Every day, thousands of average Americans receive pay cuts and even more lose their jobs. These tough times hit some worse than others, particularly college students who simply cant afford rising college tuition costs. Not only is tuition out of control, but college students also pay thousands on textbooks and room and board expenses. Thankfully, the College Board has developed its CLEP program to offer college credit at a remarkably reduced price. CLEP students can save thousands upon thousands of dollars while they work towards their degrees.

What exactly is CLEP? CLEP, or the College-Level Examination Program, offers students the opportunity to utilize knowledge obtained in independent study towards their college education. CLEP offers over 33 exams in subjects like English Literature, Calculus, Spanish Language, and Biology. Participants with high scores on the CLEP exams can receive as many as 12 college credits per exam. Best of all, to take a CLEP exam, students can sign up for only $72 ($77 starting in July). Compared to average college tuition costs and fees, the savings are remarkable.

Each CLEP exam is about 90 minutes long and covers about a semesters worth of material. In addition, each CLEP exam touches upon material similar to that of the equivalent college class. Therefore, most colleges grant the same credit to students who pass CLEP exams as they do to students who took the actual class. People from all walks of life take the CLEP test, including recent high school graduates, working adult parents, home schooled students, and even college students simply looking to save valuable money.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits CLEP offers is the ability to CLEP out of required classes. Most colleges require undergraduate students to take prerequisite classes even if a student has already mastered a subject. But with CLEP, that student can satisfy the prerequisite by passing the CLEP tests in that subject. This way, the student does not have to waste tuition dollars on a redundant introductory class and can move on to pursuing his or her interests.

CLEP is also perfect for students who may have fallen behind on their graduation requirements. Once behind, students might not be able to fit all of their required classes into their schedule. For students who are just a few credits shy of meeting their requirements, CLEP can help them catch up and graduate with their class.

Or, maybe a student would like the opportunity to gain college credit outside the classroom. CLEP might be the perfect option for students who want to engage in independent learning. In the CLEP program, students can learn course material on their own and at their own pace and still receive college credit. CLEP is especially beneficial for bilingual students who would like to use their prior knowledge to satisfy their foreign language graduation requirement.
