Injuries plagued the Cavaliers. Jamario Moon left the third quarter due to a sprained left ankle, and Shaquille O'Neal and Anderson Varejao were both inactive for Cleveland. Varejao was out of the lineup because he suffered from a hip contusion and O'Neal missed his second consecutive game with a strained shoulder.
The injuries to both starters caused Cleveland to activate Delonte West, but he only played for 14 minutes and scored two points. The Cavaliers (8-3) depended on Hickson since he entered the starting lineup, and boy did he ever deliver. In his three consecutive games starting for Cleveland, the forward has averaged 19.6 points.
The Warriors (3-7) were within four points with less than two minutes left of the game when Anthony Parker came up with a critical turnover and fed the ball ahead to James, who set up an alley-oop to Hickson. James scored 20 points in the second half and had five rebounds. Golden State's Monta Ellis led the team with 23 points, reserve Corey Maggette recorded 19 and Anthony Morrow added 18.
Stephen Curry contributed 14 points, seven assists and grabbed five rebounds for the Warriors. After the game, the point guard shook hands with James on the court. Curry said James told him to keep getting better. He continued to say that James advised him to block out "anything that's going on outside."
The Warriors had their own injury concerns. The team dressed the league minimum eight players, including Raja Bell, who didn't play because of a wrist injury that will require surgery soon. Forward Kelenna Azubuike is lost for the season; he will also have surgery shortly to repair a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Guard C.J. Watson has been out of the lineup since he tested positive for H1N1.
That left the Warriors with two reserves for the Cavs' contest: Maggette and Anthony Randolph. Both players were outscored by the Cleveland bench, 32-23. Golden State coach Don Nelson was content "with the way we played with kind of a pickup team. We were undermanned. The guys played together. I have no complaints about the game at all."
Nelson admitted that whether he had a full roster or not, the game against the Cavs was going to be tough. The Warriors' schedule doesn't get any easier; they will play at Boston on Nov. 18. Cleveland's 114 points was the highest score they've posted this season.
Before tip-off, James confidently told the press he believes he could have been a star in the National Football League. The multi-talented athlete proclaimed he could have been a star on any team in the league. He said, "If I put all my time and commitment into it, if I dedicated myself to the game of football, I could be really good." King James did not mention which position he would have played, but he probably would have stated he could play any position on the field.
