Climbing Routes of Mount Everest

Climbing Routes of Mount Everest

Climbing Routes of Mount Everest

Mount Everest has two standard climbing routes, one from Nepal side that is known as the Southeast Ridge route and one from Tibet side known as the Northeast Ridge route. Of these two, the Southeast Ridge is considered with less technical climbing risks and difficulties therefore most ascents have been made via this route. Moreover, most successful attempts are made during the most suitable climbing season of May when the jet stream gets shifted towards the north side at the arrival of monsoon. Later the extreme conditions combined with unstable wind patterns and high jet streams makes mountaineering extremely difficult and full of life threatening dangers.

During the course, the climbers make various camps in their climbing expedition so that they can acclimatize and stay at their camps before finally reaching the summit. The first camp is at the height of about 5,400 meters from the starting point and is known as the base camp. The other four camps are established at the heights of 6,100 meters, 6,500 meters, 7,400 meters and 8,000 meters respectively. The ascent through the southeast ridge starts from the south face of Mount Everest in Nepal flying to Lukla from Kathmandu and cross through Namche Bazaar to reach up to base camp. There climbers acclimatize for several days in order to cast off the risks of altitude sickness. The process is made easier by employing yak hybrids to carry the climbing equipment up to the base camp.

From base camp there begins serious dangers of the excursion. The treacherous Khumbu icefall is considered as the most dangerous part of the route. Climbers set up ropes and ladders into the icefall and make their ascent before dawn as the freezing temperature serves to glue the ice blocks well in its place. Surpassing the Khumbu icefall, there lays camp from where climbers make their excursion to the Western Cwm to the Lhotse's base where camp II is established at the altitude of 6,500 meters. From advanced base camp II climbers ascend the Lhotse face via fixed ropes up to camp 3. From there to the next camp the mountaineers face two other difficulties, which are the Geneva Spur and the Yellow brand. The first one is a huge snow covered rock, whereas the second one is a marble phyllite, both of which further requires 500 meters traverse through fixed ropes leading to camp IV on the South Col after which the climbers enter the death zone of the Everest at the height of 8,000 meters.

The second route of Mount Everest begins from the North face of the mountain from Tibet side. The expedition leads to the Rongbuk Glacier establishing a base camp at about 5,200 meters height from where climbers ascend through the medial moraine up to the base of Changtse to set camp II. The further altitude leads to North Col where camp III is established and climbers make their journey through glacier by traversing through fixed ropes in order to reach camp IV. From North Col the rocky north ridge leads to the height of 7,775 meters thus setting up the camp V. This route crosses the diagonal climb of the North Face to the base of the yellow band finally reaching the camp VI which lays at the summit at the height of 8,230 meters.

Besides these two main routes, there are several others less frequently routes to ascend through the Everest. Whether you chose to climb through the southeast ridge route or northeast ridge route make sure to make your expedition save by employing all available aids, equipments and climbing strategies along your way.
