College Campus Going Green

Going green has been used to denote the changes in the way colleges and campuses maintain their environments, construct their buildings, perform their research and even give guidelines to their students concerning the courses offered. On this basis, colleges and campuses have a special duty and responsibility concerning their students as they train future generations. University and college students have seen the need of environmental conservation in their campuses and as a result are pressuring campus officials to adopt more environment protection principles. In the effort of the colleges and campuses going green, introduction of campus courses that target students have been made; where students are offered a degree in organic farming, sustainability and environment protection (Bacher 25-27).

Importantly, this is an argumentative report that addresses college administrators on the issue of campus and college greening. In this debate, the thesis of the study is; what is the main cause of trend of campuses going green? On this basis, this study wants to outline the main reasons as to why campus students have a feeling of environment protection. It should be noted that, the main driving forces behind sustainable developments include; economics, the internal environment, and increased pollution and its effects on human health. According to Bacher, L. (25-27), college and university students have realized the need of working and operating under the principles of environmental protection and sustainability. This has happened as a result of their realization that, greening of their environment is very profitable not only to them but to the generations to come. As indicated by Bacher (25-27), more than eighty out of 260 universities and collages in New England; have signed the American collage and University Presidents Commitment' in order to guide their institutions and programs concerning climate neutrality (Bacher 25-27).

Even though interest in sustainability and greening a campus emanates from many sources; the main ones come from the students themselves, staff, management and the entire community in an attempt to moderate and invalidate climate change. On this basis, due to the strong interest in sustainable developments; it is very demanding to justify expenditures for sustainable development in a harsh economic situation. In this relation, campuses and colleges' students and administration lay some procedures and processes on how to keep their environment green in order to prevent deprivation of the available resources as a result of climate change. In this case, this group of people considers maximum proper utilization of the scarce available resources like energy and water to avoid their deprivation (Underwood 2007).

Blumenstyk (2005) has agreed with Bacher that, felt needs are the ones that drive for campus greening. In this case, whatever students, staff and the administration consider as a need to all of them; drives them to conserve their environment. On this basis, a campus located in a valley where hot summer is experienced in April; strategies are formulated designing against the sun. Among the strategies include; excessive tree planting in winter and conserving water sources to avoid its deprivation. Importantly, students, staff and university's administrations have realized the problems they cause to their environments by increasing their carbon footprints; and hence have decided to reduce them. By doing this, they help in protecting their environments and hence no adverse changes in climate (Blumenstyk 2005).

As energy prices begin to rise, universities and collages see the importance of life cycle cost study as a more efficient means in the determination of financial benefits. In this case therefore, universities are putting a lot of effort in energy power conservation by coming up with strategies that are more energy efficient. For instance, a campus may consider that planning for too many buildings may not useful at that moment as it is a wasteful. Another strategy as indicated by Ann Underwood (2007) is that, using retrofits to replace the old technology is much efficient in terms of operating costs. On the other hand, building green houses is more efficient in terms of power and water consumption hence inexpensive in operation (Underwood 2007).

The other drive for campus greening is the indoor environment which has to be looked at carefully in campuses. On this basis, the deteriorating nature of environments within campuses and colleges has forced students, staff and administration to act towards protecting their climate change. In this relation, campuses have started offering on organic farming and environmental protection processes in order to educate their students on the need for a sustainable development. As indicated by Hough, M. (2010), campuses are now planting fruits, vegetables, and some trees within their environments using organic manures that are free from chemicals. In this connection, this is a very good way of protecting environment that is free from chemicals that hinder farming. It is of importance to note that, for an environment to be conserved; there should be correct means of refuse disposal hence reducing trashes in campuses. According to Ann Underwood (2007), campuses are using correct disposal measures that may save their indoor environment where only biodegradable items are left in the soil to dispose. Additionally, Ann Underwood agreed with Bacher in the fact that; campuses are in agreement to make their environments carbon neutral. By doing this, they are planning to reduce the energy consumption and waste disposal in the effort of benefiting their environment (Underwood 2007).

Significantly, there has been increased pollution of environment which has brought about adverse effects on human health. On this basis, since campuses and colleges are institution of higher learning; they have discovered that environmental pollution does not only affect climatic change, but also human health. Even though Carlson, S. (2008) stresses that it is expensive to carry out carbon neutrality in some collages than others, it is very helpful in environmental conservation since it reduces chances of pollution. On this basis, environmental pollution brings about diseases like typhoid, cholera, and tuberculosis which damages human health. In this connection, campuses have realized a lot of money and resources are wasted in the treatment of these diseases which could have been prevented through environmental preservation. A point worth noting is that, trashes left on the ground may be harmful to ones health which may result to unexpected injuries. Therefore, Carlson, S. should be informed that the cost of preserving environment in campuses and colleges is far much less as compared to the benefits that are accrued from greening campuses. Importantly, campuses and colleges are supposed to produce top creams of the society and hence should lead in environmental conservation through sustainable development (Carlson 2008).
