College Tuition
The achievement of college education is one of the most essential needsas considered by students who enroll in various colleges in pursuit of college degree. Despite the value that is attached to this type of education, there are number factors that may makestudents to lack the funding required for their tuition or for catering on some of their needs (Spainhour 25). If such situation face students who are gifted in athletics, private institutions can offer academic scholarships to the students in order to allow them to finish their academic programs and the same time play for the college. Such scholarship programs have helped a number of students from humble backgrounds, though there are those who when awarded scholarships based on their athletic talents fail to complete their studies as most of them join sportsas professional athletes. With the number of athletes joining professional sports after being awarded scholarships increasing, there is need for stipulate that such athletes graduate with degrees or pay back the amount of money spent on their education should they out of their scholarship programs.
There are a number of reasons as to why athletes should be required to graduate in their respective study programs if enrolled in the scholarship programs. One of these reasons stems from the fact that "scholarship programs are expensive" to give particularly to a good number of athletes which may be the case with many institutions of learning(Cauthen and Benjamin 56). Considering that such education institutions spend a lot of funds to offset the tuition for the athletes, it is necessary to demand that athletes on scholarship graduate as one the requirement before they are given the scholarship. Making it a requirement will greatly cushion colleges from falling into financial woes as a result of students pulling out to sports for any reason. In the end, this strategy will promote effectiveness in learning.
Athletics scholarships are often given by private schools with a primary aim of allowing students who are gifted in athletics to play for the institutions while the "cost of their education is been catered for" (Delaney and Madigan 124). This implies that the education institution grants scholarship to student with the belief that these students will play for the college. If a student talking studies in college on scholarship program quits learning and joins the professional sports in order to play for them, such student will have violated the trust that was bestowed on them by the collegeThe college also has a lot of expectations from the athletes and their consistency in education achievement is hinged on the graduation of students. If the athletestudent's insists on leaving the scholarship program before completion, the college is justified in asking them for refunds from the athletes on the amount spent on their educationsince they violated their contract
Additionally, a lot of money can be saved by colleges offering athletics scholarship to student who may opt to quit their education for sports. Saving of funds will be achieved through the "writing of contracts" that mandates that students on athletics scholarship program pay back their amount should any opt to the professional industry (Britz and Powe 144). Through the refunds made by those determined to join sporting, colleges will be able to make savingsthat can be utilized by other students who are ready to play for the college and at the same time complete their course in good time. Given that completion of such education program by the athletes avoid wasting money and time spent on them, there is need to make it a requirement that each students on scholarship plan complete their scholarship program in time. When students on scholarship insist on going to play for professional clubs, the college will lose a lot of money (Woods 127). With completion of a course being paramount, the college will save a lot of money from potential wastage.
The choice of playing for in professional sports may sometime arise due to the wrong influence that students receive from their friends who may consider academic less important than sport. However, if it is mandated that athletes on scholarship program are required to finish the degrees, this may help some of the athletics to avoid making mistakes that may come out to be costly and of great effect to their for their well-being. Without such restriction, it is possible for that a good number of athletes may let go their education pursuits and follow on professional athletics even when they have "thought less about their future" (Svare 150). This approach will thus be of great help towards ensuring students in scholarship programs complete their programs and detest on pursuing athletics while still in college. Looking at the condition set for opting out of the scholarship program, students are likely to cancel such athletic ambitions of playing for clubs until the right time comes for them to join them the club of their interest. At the same time, the idea of paying back the institutions will make some of the athletes to make appropriate decisions concerning their studies.
Whenever students who have talents in athletes get scholarship opportunities, they are able to be take on different study programs of their interest which makes them achieve their career goals and objectives. However, letting such students drop their studies in favor or professional games makes the student halt their leaning even when their future would have been bright in the academic domain(Wong 197). The end result of this will be the reduced benefits from education systems. Nevertheless, prescribingthat student athletes graduate especially those on scholarship ensures that no potential student is lost to the wrong are of professionalism. Graduation herein serves as tool that allows for successive completion of those on scholarship regardless of their abilities.
Apart from being given tuition to complete their education as the rest of the students, the athletes on scholarship gain access to opportunities that other student do not have access to. These opportunities though few present the students with opening to gain from other activities and events in college and ought to be available to any other students (Kissinger and Miller 23). Agreeing to leave one's studies for professional athletics means that a student has wasted the opportunity that may have beengiven to another student who could have used it wisely and appropriately. Making it a requirement that all athletes on scholarship graduate or refund the money used on them when in collegenecessitates that such student to seize the opportunity and continue taking their studies. From this outcome, the price of graduating or refunding the amount spent in the college that sponsored the athletic students will make the students take their study opportunities well and in a meaningful way.
While it may seem that athletes have no need for degrees, it is important to know that a degree is useful to any person even to those whose professionalism lies in areas such as athletics. Making it necessary for the student athletes on scholarship to graduate with a degreewill promote the field of sports in the sense that, students with such qualifications is more likely to be taking key roles as administrators and policy makers in sports more easily than those with no university degree (Cassidy, Jones and Potrac146). Pushing for refunds from student will simply work to contain the students in their course.
Though students may join professional sports if they wish so, those who are in scholarship are faced with an ethical dilemma when it comes to choose whether to proceed with college or join sports. With the college sponsoring the athletes, dictating that athlete students graduate with a degree if they are on sponsorship reinforce the ethical implication that such students will be faced with. Being that student with talents in athletics are sponsored, it will be "unethical" for them to quit taking their studies in favor of sports(Morgan 139). To avoid doing what is unethical, a requirement can be passed to make sure that those on scholarship graduate instead of using the facilities of their respective institution to gain fame and take off from their course.
Without doubt, there are several reasons as to why athlete students on scholarship need to finish their studies and graduate in their respective field of study. This can be made possible if requirements are enforced making it necessary for such students to complete their studies first before joining sports. This move will save the college a lot of money, allow the students to use opportunities well, avoid the danger of wrong influence and inappropriate decision, resolve ethical dilemma and produce athletes who are knowledgeable in their field of interest. When these have been achieved, the college as well as the student will have benefited from the entire situation involving learner taking their studies while playing for the colleges.
