What makes a diet good? There are three things to think about: the diet plan menu, the way it works short term and last but definitely not least, the long term results the diet gives.

Choose a diet plan which has foods you like in it and also think about what's behind the diet: if you like counting calories, go for a diet which is based on reducing your calorie intake. If you'd rather eat as much as you want to and make changes in what you eat, not so much in the amounts you eat, think about starting a low-carbohydrate diet. If you find it impossible to do any counting whatsoever, adopt a diet plan with exact instructions and detailed menus, and let the others do the thinking for you.
Another factor: how does the diet work short term? Most fast diets give what they promise: fast weight loss in a short period of time. It is good to remember that this weight is mostly water weight, which will creep back on you if you return to your original eating habits after the fast diet is over. If you prefer a weight loss plan which doesn't demand extreme dietary changes, the results might become visible only a bit later.
Most low-carbohydrate diet plans have an induction phase in the beginning. It means that you limit your carbohydrate down to about 20-30 grams per day, which is a great way to get your weight loss started. There is something you need to know though. For some reason you might not notice any change in your actual weight after you have started a low-carbohydrate diet, but you will definitely see changes in your looks. Your body will become slimmer and firmer in almost no time.
Last thing to think about: how are the results long term? Many fast diets offer only temporary results, because they don't teach you how to change your eating habits for good. Yoyo-dieting, in other words gaining and losing weight and then gaining it back again is not good by any means, so try to stay away from it and find something more sustainable. Whichever diet plan you go for, make sure it offers advice on how to continue controlling your weight once the actual weight loss period is over and you have reached your goals. The greatest fast weight loss diets have one common factor. They all push you to change your regular eating habits, which is the key for permanent weight loss.
None of the diet plans will work if you don't follow them! How to stay motivated during the diet? First, have a clear goal, something like "I want to fit into my old jeans" or "I want to be able to play with my kids without getting out of breath". Have the jeans in sight to remind you of your goal, or write the goal on a post-it and stick it on your fridge door.. anything to help you remember what you are working for. Second, keeping a food diary might help. Make sure to follow your progress by measuring yourself once a week, always at the same time, and put the numbers on paper or into your electric food diary. Now you can compare the numbers and see the progress. There is nothing more motivating than seeing the difference with your own eyes. Remember to praise and reward yourself for a job well done. You deserve it!
