Come Visit The Ardennes

The Mountains of the Ardennes, which also gives its name to this region

, stretches across Belgium, Germany and France. The position of this area placed it at the center of many major European conflicts through the centuries and therefore the region has changed hands several times over the decades and centuries.

This is a beautiful area which has many tourist attractions and is also close to many places of interest.

The French side of the Ardennes still has many places with names that still sound very Germanic and we can say that the cuisine there has more in common with the sausages and stews of their neighbours that the good restaurants in Paris. There are of course other points which make the Ardennes region that is worth a visit.

The first thing you can see is the Ardennes forest in France.

The immense forest of the Ardennes is one of the main reasons to visit this region of France. Covering approximately 150,000 acres and featuring beech and birch, which are home to many bird species, the forest is an ideal place to hike, picnic or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that prevails. If you want to know more about the history of this ancient land, there is a forest museum in the city of Renwez. There are several trails through the forest and the mountains that can be enjoyed on foot, on horseback or bicycle. Mountain biking is popular in the Ardennes and there are several facilities where you can rent bikes and all safety equipment needed to enjoy these trails and have a lot of fun.

There are also many castles and churches in this region.

There are many castles in the region, ranging from medieval fortifications like in Montcarnet to luxurious country houses in Bazeilles for example. Because of the history of the region, military fortifications have played a very important role and thus there is an extremely strong presence. The restored 19th century fortifications in the Ayzelles are open to the public, with tours of this fascinating structure. The beautiful abbey of Mouzon has a distinctive architecture and visitors can enjoy concerts every Sunday during the summer.

There are beautiful cities in the French Ardennes, such as Sedan with its castle and Charleville.

There is also a World Puppet Festival, held each September in the town of Charleville-Mezieres which is worth going to.
