Comfort Eating - Does Exercise Help Control This?

Exercise is vitally important to weight loss /control and health in general

, but does it help you control comfort eating.

In many ways it does play an important component part in the process. When you exercise you produce a chemical called Serotonin which is called the happy drug. It is a natural chemical that our brain produces and releases to make us feel good. We crave it!

The main reason we comfort eat is for the feel good factor. Food provides this for most of us in a quick easy burst. However, in excess food has many negatives, weight gain and bad nutrition being two of them. Therefore we should be looking at other ways of releasing Serotonin that have benefits to health, exercise being a particularly good one.

Most people sigh at the thought of exercising. Having to be energetic is often far too much to expect of us with the busy lives we lead. However, exercise actually has the opposite effect. Although the thought of it is daunting when we do it we feel immediately revived and full of energy, happy and elated from the Serotonin and ready to tackle anything. By introducing exercise you will not only control comfort eating but will feel good and lose weight - what more can you ask!


Motivation is the Key

So how do we motivate ourselves to exercise? I am sure you have just conjured up a picture of a gym full of toned individuals looking amazing that never put anything in their mouths that they shouldn't.

Well in my opinion that is too much like hard work. Life needs to me much easier than that otherwise you will be doomed to fail - unless of course this is what you want to do and can motivate yourself to do it. Many people have with amazing results.

What you need to do is to sit down with a cup of tea, coffee or water if you want to be really healthy, and realistically plan your week. List all available times that you could allocate to exercise without it becoming a chore. Then select a few slots to begin with so that you do not over commit and give up.

Next list all forms of exercise that you are prepared to do. This does not need to be an hour doing aerobics or squash. It can be any exercise that makes you slightly out of breath or makes you move more than normal e.g. walking the dog briskly, gardening, pilates / yoga class or tape from the comfort of your own home.

Just list everything you can think of and select one or two that appeal to you. You can always rotate these by introducing other methods later.


You should find that you feel totally different in yourself - invigorated with renewed energy.

The most important thing is to exercise when you want to comfort eat - even if you are at work. By this you could take a walk around the office if big enough or walk up and down a couple of flights of stairs. Or if allowed, take a short break and walk. Anything that takes you away from the temptation to comfort eat will be a bonus and burn calories in the bargain!
