As soon as you sense that you're in trouble, you could dash to the console, press one of those, and help would be on the way. The alarm itself will also ring loudly letting the criminal know that a process has been set in motion that can't be stopped. If they have any sense at all, they'll make a run for it right then and you'll be out of harm's way.
