Srinagar: US President Barack Obama's assertion about Kashmir issue might have had all pro-freedom groups welcoming in unison saying it vindicated their stand, but when it comes to a common man all of Kashmir doesn't seem to be reacting as pro-freedom did.

While some were jubilant to hear Obama stating Kashmir is a long standing dispute', others statement would hardly matter considering its anti-Muslim' policy.

After avoiding K-word for the major part of his stay in India, Obama finally spoke about in response to a question during a joint conference with Indian Premier, Manmohan Singh. "Kashmir is a long standing dispute which needs to be resolved," Obama said.

Mudasir Nazir, a doctor, told Agence India Press that Obama's statement is a positive development' regarding Kashmir issue. "It has definitely a positive development. America as a super power has an influence on all the political exchanges in the world. If it is ready to step in to resolve the Kashmir issue, Kashmir should feel that world has started to realize our aspirations," says Mudasir.

A major chunk Kashmir population, particularly young generation followed Obama's India visit keenly waiting what would be his take on Kashmir issue.

No sooner he uttered the K-word, reactions started to pour in from various quarters.

Irfan Ahmad, a political science student, reckons that with Kashmir finding it hard to have big powers of the world rallying around their struggle', Obama's statement should be seen as a result of what Kashmir have done over the last four months or so.

"His assertion that Kashmir is a long standing dispute is an outcome of what Kashmiris have done over the last five months," he says. "If you seen big powers like Russia and England hardly speak about Kashmir issue because of their growing relations with India, recent example being UK prime minister visiting India without making a mention of Kashmir. Keeping that in mind, Kashmir should feel world has started take their resistance movement seriously."

Obama's statement hasn't found takers in Kashmir wholesale, there is a section of people who reckon it expecting something special from a country that has wrecked havoc in many Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Iraq was a big mistake.

Keeping in mind the US's' anti-Muslim' policy, Muzzamil Ahmad, an government employee, feels, latest statement would remain confined to lip service as America wouldn't like to have its potential big market' annoyed.

"It is just a lip service. In practicality, the US wouldn't do anything to press India for resolution of India, a country US sees as its potential market for investment. Economic factors decide relationship between the two countries so don't expect anything from the US," he said.

Ghulam Rasool Bhat, a shopkeeper, says that he was surprised to see Kashmiris react jubilantly to the statement of Obama, a president of a country that was responsible for killing lakhs of Muslims worldwide.

"How can I forget the US's role in killing people in Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Iraq? I am surprised people reacting so jubilantly. It would be better for us to take our freedom struggle forward on our own." Bhat says. (AIP)
