Common Medical School Interview Questions To Expect

Securing an interview invitation is the end result of a lot of hard work and determination

. However, it is also just the start of a lot more of the same; if not more so. Medical school interview questions are well known to be tough, but with a little planning, there is no reason for them to be too troublesome.

The first thing to understand about medical school interview questions is that they are set out to get the best answers from the best candidates. Whilst an interview panel will be looking for key words and phrases; there are no right or wrong answers.

Each school will also have its own approach to the process and ask different and searching questions. There are a few standard types that are likely to be asked however, which are outlined below; along with a little guidance as to how to formulate a response.

Why do you want to pursue a career in medicine? - One of the most basic questions; and one that you are likely to have covered in your application forms. Reiterate the information you gave here, but clearly demonstrate your passion and point out any areas of interest you are eager to study.

Why do you want to study at this particular program? - One of the most important questions you are likely to be asked; get this wrong at your peril! You should have researched the school well of course; its history, culture and so on. But you should also be able to equate reasons as to why they are your choice.

Describe your best qualities? - A favorite in any interview, and one that demands honesty. Do not be arrogant; and explain why and how you have developed these qualities. In preparation; ask close relations what they think your strengths are.

Describe your worst qualities? - Possibly one of the toughest questions that could ever be asked. Again, honesty is key and, an absolute no is to suggest you do not have any; we all do! Explain what areas you are weak in, and importantly, how you are confronting these and righting them. Again, seek the consul of those around you for advice.

These are only a small selection of commonly asked questions; and each institution will have its own approach. Failing to prepare is indeed preparing to fail; so practice, keep your answers succinct and always be prepared for the follow up queries.
