These days, many Americans are quite concerned with their home security

. With the economic situation as it is, there are more people who are desperate than ever, and some fear that this will cause crime to rise. As people grow more hopeless and increasingly concerned about where they are going to get cash to do simple things like pay rent and buy groceries, some may very well turn to petty thefts and burglaries in order secure some kind of income. Reports of small increases in crime have been coming in from across the country, and some people are fearing for the worst.

But most sensible homeowners already have taken the basic, standard precautions for protecting their home security they have invested in home security systems and sturdy fences, etcetera. Sometimes, though, this can seem like it is not quite enough. The thing is, unless you live in an extremely crime ridden area, most likely you are going to be just fine. Your home alarm system will be enough to protect you in case of the extremely rare event that you are targeted. There is no need to upgrade to retina scans to enter the house and bulletproof glass on all of the windows. But if you are feeling nervous, there are always smaller, everyday ways that you can upgrade your home security in your own home. These little tricks of the trade all cost essentially nothing, and are more based on common sense than just about anything else.

1. Check who is at the door before you open it.

The fact of the matter is that when you open your door to a stranger, you are giving someone with bad intentions a fairly easy way to get into your home. It does not take a criminal much to shove an unsuspecting household resident inside and slam the door behind the two of you, especially if the robber has some kind of weapon with which to threaten you. Once again, the odds of this happening are slim, but it nonetheless makes sense to make sure you know who is at the door before you open it, especially if you are home alone. If you do not have a security door or a peep hole, try to take a look through a window, or install a chain lock (they are relatively inexpensive at your local hardware store.

2. Do not leave the spare key under the mat.

Many people will install incredibly expensive, elaborate home alarm systems, security doors, and tall rod iron fences, but then do something as stupid as sliding their spare key under the "Welcome" mat that resides on their front stoop. This is virtually asking to be targeted. Find a more inventive hiding spot, like in a garage that you have to open with a pass code, or ask the neighbors if they will hang on to a spare copy for you.

3. Actually turn your home security system on.

This may sound like a no brainer, but many people are too lazy to actually activate the system when they go to sleep at night. Do not be one of them!
