Common Types of Air Conditioner Coil Repair

Being stuck in the heat of the summer months without an air conditioner is never a good situation. Like any mechanical device, an air conditioner needs preventative maintenance in order to keep running, but it's just as likely that the device will eventually need part of it repaired as well.

Two of the hardest working parts of a home's air conditioning unit are the condenser and evaporator coils. With these two coils, which are usually made up of copper tubes, being as important as they are coil repair isn't an uncommon service to have performed.

In the simplest possible terms, the jobs of the evaporator and condenser coils are to draw heat from the air and then reject it, respectively. These two devices working in unison serve to make rooms inside of the house comfortable when the weather outside is hot but a malfunction in one can make it so that the other is incapable of doing its job.

There are a number of different methods of coil repair that can be undertaken to address the problems that commonly occur with air conditioner coils. Here are some of the common issues that many homeowners see and the solutions that can address them:

With the condenser coil being housed inside of a unit that typically sits outside of the house, it can sometimes become cluttered with debris like leaves and small branches blown by strong enough winds. After disconnecting the power to the unit, removing these obstructions is an easy enough task. The unit could benefit from this becoming a routine activity that is undertaken roughly every year or so. At the same time, applying water or a specially made chemical designed to clean the coils would be a good idea.

Bent or damaged coils have also been known to cause problems for many homeowners. When the fins in the condensers are bent, they can hurt the system's overall efficiency and the homeowner can incur a needless increase in the energy bills as a result. One method of coil repair in dealing with this is to purchase a specially made fin comb to straighten bent coils.

At times, contaminants such as dirt, dust and pollen can be carried on the air and absorbed into the condenser, causing the same loss of efficiency problems that bent fins can cause. Unlike bent fins, however, cleaning out the dirt that gets absorbed into the condenser isn't quite so simple. While some forms of coil repair can be done by the homeowner, cleaning out buildups of dirt and other contaminants are better left to professional air conditioner repairmen.

Catching these problems will prevent complete failure of your entire air conditioning system and the costly bill that would accompany it, so keeping an eye on your condenser and evaporator units makes sense.
