Levonelle's mode of action is similar to that of ellaOne. Its active ingredient levonorgestrel prevents ovulation and creates changes in cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. ellaOne has a different active ingredient called ulipristal acetate.

As far as the safety standards are concerned, both these pills are approved by the MHRA and the FDA to be safe for women seeking help for emergency contraception. Any woman aged 18 years or above can take ulipristal acetate. Levonorgestrel can be taken by a woman aged 16 years or above. But make sure you talk to a doctor before taking either of them. Also, do not take emergency contraceptive pills when you are already pregnant.
