This is another choice one needs to make between branded and non branded computers. The branded ones have assured quality and come with a warranty, but on the flip side they are quite expensive. Non branded computers are inexpensive but the quality cannot be assured. Most of the times a branded computer will always work best, if you need guarantee and quality.

Research
The worst thing you can do is buy the first computer you come across. You are investing your money here, it won't hurt to research and know all the facts. Compare prices with all manufacturers using various online sites.
Configuration
Again depending upon your needs, this will change. Most of the users purchase computers to browse the web. For such usage, a PC with 256MB memory, 64MG graphic card, 20GB Hard drive will suffice. But if you are going to use powerful games, more applications and software then you can opt for 1GB memory, 128MB or more VGA, 80GB - 120GB. Also make sure the computer you buy is totally upgradeable, this way you can change with technology.
Monitor
There are a variety of monitors available in the market, such as 17 inch, 20 inch, flat screen and lots more. If you are on a budget, stay away from the latest and fanciest. Don't buy it simply because it looks good, and your neighbor has one. There is a lot of difference between a LCD and a CRT monitor. While CRT monitors are bigger, heavier and consumer more power, LCD monitors look sleek, compact and lighter therefore they are much more expensive. Each has its own advantages and limitations. Do a little research to know more about how it works and how it will suit you. Monitors usually come with a 3 year guarantee, make sure yours has one too.
Warranty
Take your time and consider the warranty periods and conditions, before signing any documents. Also make sure all the service shops are nearby, otherwise you may have to travel a long distance to get to your nearest service provider.

By now you would have decided the computer you need. Visit online forums and check out reviews about the product. This gives you a first hand opinion on the product and helps you decide if this is meant for you.
Refurbished
If you want to save money and buy a used or a refurbished computer, this will also work well. A refurbished computer is one that has been returned to the company after being checked out as good to go, but cannot be sold again as new. All major computer companies have a refurbished section that includes such products. You can save considerably, but a few points must be kept in mind while buying second hand computers:
Check how old the computer is, the newer the better.
Check for physical damages, if any.
The operating system and additional software packages (if any) must be licensed and original.
Operate on the computer a little to get the feel of it.
If you are not able to decide, take someone along, who knows these things well.
