Concealed Carry Permits and the Michigan CPL Application
Concealed Carry Permits and the Michigan CPL Application
If you live in Michigan and you wish to carry a concealed weapon, you need to understand the Michigan CPL application process. Knowing how to complete this process can allow you to get the permission you need to carry a gun for your protection or peace of mind.
Reasons to Obtain a CPL Application
Carrying a concealed weapon has become a much more popular activity with the recent increase in violent crime over the past ten years. Most states have laws in effect that will allow you to carry a concealed weapon, as long as you are licensed through the state and follow all of the proper laws and procedures put in place by the state.
Michigan is one state that has a fairly easy to understand and easy to apply for concealed weapons permit, and properly submitting the Michigan CPL application forms will allow you to legally obtain a CPL, or concealed pistol license. Fortunately, in the state of Michigan, it is not difficult to obtain a permit for a gun that you can use to protect yourself and your family.
Requirements to Meet Before Obtaining a CPL Permit
The basic requirements for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License are that you must be 21 years of age, of sound mind (i.e., not a current inmate at a mental facility), have been at least a six month resident of the state of Michigan, have attending a Michigan state concealed carry permit training class, and not currently be facing charges or have any past convictions on any number of misdemeanors or felonies such as stalking, violent crimes, etc. You must also not be the subject of any protection orders such as domestic violence restraining orders, etc.
You will need to apply at the office of your county of residence by picking up a CPL permit application, and you will need to fill this out and return it to the county clerk or the local police office. The time period that it will take for your application to be checked into and approved or denied is roughly one to three months, after which time you will receive your CPL from the county.
During the background check, the county will investigate your record to determine if you will pose a hazard to yourself or others based on your ability to carry a weapon, and they will also determine whether or not you have been convicted of any of the prohibited offenses on the list for the state of Michigan.
What If Your Application is Denied?
If your application is denied, you can appeal the denial through the Circuit Court, and if the denial was found to be unlawful, the Circuit Court can force the county to pay your legal fees. Once you have obtained your permit, you can legally carry a pistol anywhere except certain pistol free zones. One important notation to remember about a Michigan weapons permit is that you cannot carry a pistol while you are intoxicated (any blood alcohol content over 0.02%), so you will want to avoid bars or at least not drink if you are planning on carrying a pistol in Michigan.
