There are laws which censor content on the internet and hence restrict people's freedom of speech (Communications Decency Act 1996). I being an internet publisher as well as an enthusiastic user of the internet have been concerned with these types of laws. By having approved this act, the congress has created a pattern which disregards laws concerning censorship of the internet. The censorship regulations which have been condoned are quite similar to the types which are in existence for the broadcast media as well. By treating the internet as a form of a broadcast media is a mistake which many people make. This is considered to be a mistake because the internet is not similar to any type of information medium which has been developed.
It is due to my concerns regarding internet censorship that I have written Internet Censorship is Absurd and Unconstitutional'. In this essay I have given my views as to why the content found on the internet should not be censored. I have provided two reasons to back up my statement. For one, any law which censors the internet is too unenforceable and broad on this form of a global medium of information. Secondly, censoring the internet is a form of violation of the First Amendment for the users who make use of the internet in the United States of America. This essay will give an insight as to why the only possible solution to the existing problems relating to the internet is self regulation. Should it be considered illegal to publish literature on the internet which contains indecent content? However then why should similar type of work be allowed to be printed? This is one question which has been the basis of the debate on internet censorship. This debate is currently a major topic the US Congress has to be deal with.
