Confidence is the Key: What Every Great Security Guard Needs

I was recently in a state office building to visit my cousin. It was a really hot day and I had a bottle of water that was once frozen, but had just thawed enough to be cold and drinkable. In my opinion, that is bottled water at it's best. I had just gotten off the bus and going inside of an air-conditioned building was a welcomed relief. After 911, security has been justly tightened and what once had been acceptable was now a security risk. It is normal to have your bags checked for bombs, weapons, or whatever could be a breach of security.

I welcome this inconvenience, I applaud the brave security guards who risk their lives everyday to insure my safety. On this particular day, however, I was not in an applauding mood. The "bag checking" guard informed me that I was not allowed to take my ice cold water inside pass the checkpoint. I was perturbed to say the least. "Why not?!", was my response. He explained that because some people were sneaking alcohol inside the building, all beverages were banned. Only employees were allowed to do so. He then went on to say that I had to either drink my water there, throw it away, or empty contents and keep the empty bottle. I was visibly upset, however, I did as I was told by emptying it into the grass. What is the point? The security guard displayed confidence the entire time. He did not get intimidated by my expression of anger. He maintained his position with a cool, calm and confident manner. He knew what his job was and he demonstrated his authority in an unapologetic manner. He was confident. When hiring a security guard, a company wants someone who isn't shy and diffident. Confidence means power and authority. A person will think twice about committing a crime in a place where a confident, alert and engaging security guard is stationed. And after that water bottle incident, although I was angry, this guard had my respect. It was all in how he carried his position.
