Confidentiality Is Paramount For Makers Of Concept Cars
From Geneva to Beijing, Detroit to Milan, or Sydney to Paris
, there is a motor show somewhere in the world throughout each year.
They are a showcase where manufacturers can unveil their latest refinements to existing models, but perhaps the feature that arouses most interest is the glimpse into the future provided by the prototypes and concept cars on show.
A concept vehicle is a car made to showcase new styling and or new technology to assess customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not have a chance of being produced, depending on the response. Plainly manufacturers will not want ot invest in setting up a full-scle production line for a particular model before they have some idea of likely interest and potential sales.
The focus may be on the ultra luxury, exclusive end of the market or it may be on the affordable family car. Small, city and environmentally friendly cars of the future have also become a regular feature or these shows, often exciting a considerable amount of interest as people become more concerned about global warming, finite oil reserves and environmental pollution.
Some exhibited prototype models are functional models, but they are generally a long way from being safe and drivable on a public road and are likely to go through some changes between show and large scale manufacture. Many do not realise that some concepts may look like "real" vehicles but are actually either a shell, made of a material like fibreglass, while others are made of materials like wax, clay, metal, fibreglass or plastic.
These days the design process is likely to start on a computer, using CAD (computer-aided design) and may then be made as a mock-up or a working model that can then be tested and refined.
Some never leave the concept stage and are either destroyed after exhibition or stored under cover locked away for many years.
The competition between vehicle manufacturers is intense as is the pressure to produce something new and innovative so the process of developing exhibits ahead of a motor show has to be kept top secret.
This secrecy continues to be crucial after it leaves the design studio and is on its way to the next show. Secure, covered transport by a reputable specialist company is therefore essential.
Similarly a model that has been made out of fibreglass, wax or clay is likely to be fragile and in some cases also susceptible to damage from variations in temperature. Such models need to be moved securely, not only hidden under cover, but also in temperature controlled transporters to ensure there is no damage in transit.
