Configuring User Account Control in Windows 7

Goal

Goal

This article aims to demonstrate how to configure the User Account Control in Windows 7.

What are the settings for User Account Control?

The User Account Control (UAC) will notify you before changes are made on the computer requiring a permission-level administrator. The standard configuration of UAC notifies you when programs try to make changes to the computer, but you can change the frequency with which the UAC notifies you.

Presented in Windows Vista, UAC is now less intrusive and more flexible. Fewer programs and the Windows Task 7 require their consent. If you have administrator privileges on the PC, you can also adjust your notification settings for UAC in Control Panel.

The following table provides a description of the settings of UAC and the possible impact of each setting in the security of your computer.

Configuration Description Impact on safety Always notify

You will be notified before the programs on your computer or make changes to settings doWindows requiring permissions from an administrator.

When you are notified, your desktop is dimmed and you must approve or deny the request in the UAC dialog box to be able to perform any other action on the computer. The fading of the desktop is called the secure desktop, because other programs can not be executed while it is grayed out.

This is the most secure setting.

When you are notified, you should read carefully the contents of each dialog box before allowing you to make changes to your computer.

Just notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer

You will be notified before the programs make changes to your computer that require permissions from an administrator.

You will not be notified if you try to change the settings doWindows requiring permissions from an administrator.

You will be notified if a program beyond doWindows try to make changes to a configuration doWindows.

It is usually safe to allow them to make changes to Windows settings without notifying you. However, some programs provided with Windows commands or data can be transmitted to them, and some malicious software can take advantage of that using these programs to install files or change settings on your computer. You should always be careful of the programs that enables them to run on your computer.

Just notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer (not dim my desktop)

You will be notified before the programs make changes to your computer that require permissions from an administrator.

You will not be notified if you try to change the settings doWindows requiring permissions from an administrator.

You will be notified if a program beyond doWindows try to make changes to a configuration doWindows.

This configuration is equal to "notify me when programs try to only make changes to my computer, but you will not be notified in the secure desktop.

Because the UAC dialog box is not in secure desktop in this configuration, other programs can interfere with the appearance of the dialog box. That will be a small security risk if there is already a malicious program running on your computer.

Never notified

You will not be notified before any change is made on the computer. If you logged on as administrator, the programs can make changes to your computer without your knowledge.

If you have logged on as a standard user, any changes that need permission from an administrator are automatically denied.

If you select this setting, you must restart the computer to complete the process of disabling UAC. Once you disable the UAC, people who log on as administrator will always have the permissions of an administrator.

This is the least secure setting. When you set the UAC to notify never opens the computer for possible security risks.

If you never set the UAC to notify should be careful of the programs that run because they have the same access to your computer as you. This includes reading and making changes to protected areas system, your personal data, save files and everything is stored on the computer. The programs can also communicate and exchange information with everything that your computer connects to, including the Internet.
