Running is one of the most effective forms of exercise. It's not only healthy but also great fun. And it's definitely one of the most affordable types of exercise as well - though I advise not to save on running shoes.
What makes running so special? First of all, it makes you happy! This may sound like one of these things that sound too good to be true but this one is actually true. It's a proven fact that running relieves stress and literally makes you feel better because it releases the feel-good hormone endorphins.
Running is also a great exercise for the cardiovascular system. It helps the blood and oxygen flow become more efficient. Believe me, if you compare the heart and lungs of a 60-year old who has been a runner for many years with a 20-year old who has never done any exercises, you will find that the older person is in a better shape.
Many people also run to lose or control their weight. There is no doubt this helps. However, don't expect an excessive loss of weight overnight. Persistence is the key to success.
So, running seems like a no-brainer. Yet, not everyone runs in the right way. There are correct and incorrect ways to move and running makes no exception.
You should maintain good posture throughout your run. Keep your head up and look forward while you run. This will help you feel relaxed. Don't forget that your head weighs no less than 13 pounds. You don't want it dragging you down.
Make sure your shoulders are loose and relaxed. If your muscles are tight and tense, you simply waste energy. If you are just starting out, you should run at a conversational pace, meaning you should be able to talk easily. Don't overdo it.
After each run, it is recommended to stretch your muscles. Your body needs time to recover, whether you're a beginner or an experienced marathon runner.
Think of clothing, too. Obviously, you shouldn't dress too warm in summer, but you shouldn't wear too much in winter either. In lower temperatures, it is best to dress in three layers that keep you warm but also allow sweat to escape.
Finally, note that certain medical conditions require monitoring while you run so if in doubt, contact your doctor before you start with running.
