Consideration Of Physician Assistant Programs

Medical schools all over the country have physician assistant programs that aims

to provide education and training for those interested to become physician assistants. These programs are offered to those qualified to healthcare personnel who have a basic level of qualification like nursing or physiotherapy, to train them in medical work under the supervision of a doctor of medicine. Those who finish the physician assistant program can perform examinations on patients, diagnose sicknesses, and analyze laboratory tests, always directly under a physicians supervision. Most of these programs are given by universities and take two years to finish.

Top medical schools offer programs for physician assistant and some have upgraded the programs to the Masters Degree. There is also a Bachelors degree and an Associate level offered in some schools. Participants in the courses are taught subjects that physicians study in the first two years of their studies in medicine, like medical ethics, human anatomy, physiology, clinical pharmacology, pathology, physical diagnosis, and biochemistry. The classes also include actual clinical training in all possible aspects of medicine practice like pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, family medicine, gynecology, geriatrics and emergency medicine. Physician assistant programs train the students in actual clinical work under the guidance of physicians. Schools offering such classes are ranked high in medical school rankings.

Of course, the doctors look forward to hiring graduates of the physician assistant programs from the medical schools and it has been observed that most of physician assistants work in two jobs, usually one under a physician and another for a health care unit. This is because of the great demand for physician assistants and other workers in the medical field. For example, Accelerated Nursing Programs have been introduced to train nurses for immediate deployment. Nurse anesthetist schools are doing their best to produce nurses in this area of specialization. Optometry schools are also bent on producing more graduates in Optometry. Medical schools prefer to offer programs for physician assistants because they can work in almost any medical field after their training. They work in conjunction with doctors and are not considered as medical assistants as they can provide health care services and can perform regular clinical and clerical duties. As part of the training in the program, they can function as supervisors managing medical assistants and technicians.

After graduation from the physician assistant course and depending on the assignment given by the supervising physician, the physician assistants are usually on the job for 40 hours a week. They usually become specialists of the jobs assigned to them especially after a long time exposed to the particular work assigned to them by the supervising doctor. They even do rounds in the hospital to check on patients and may be on call at certain times, since the night duty is not unusual for the physician assistants.
