When you're considering studying in the United States as an international student, you'll want to consider the entirety of the experience you're going to have. There will be plenty of time to worry about scholarships, other sources of funding, the school's resources and the rest of the elements that go along with getting a good education. Attending schools in large cities as an international student can be extremely stressful. Even for students who are native to the United States, the larger cities can be quite trying. The cost of living tends to be very high and the campuses tend to be very crowded. When you're already feeling a bit like a fish out of water, it's very difficult to deal with the feeling that you're just one face in a very large crowd. Some international students who opt to go to teaching universities, as opposed to research universities with huge class sizes, tend to avoid these hassles. There are some significant advantages to smaller class sizes.

Teaching universities sometimes have class sizes of around 20 people. For international students, this means more personalized attention and a more comfortable learning environment.

Another important aspect of your education in the United States will be taking in the culture and the landscape. Teaching universities, because of the more personal nature of the educational environment, allow you to meet new people much more easily, which will help you to find friends who will show you around. This is more important than it may seem on the surface. Opportunities to meet friends come much more easily when you're in a smaller class and when you know everyone by their first name. Some teaching universities have very small class sizes and this is a huge help in this regard.

A teaching university also tends to have a more cohesive sense of community than a research university. For international students, this can be psychologically very comforting. Instead of being at a very large, prestigious research university where the student body tends to be divided up according to fraternities, sororities, income and other elements, a teaching university tends to offer an experience where you know your fellow students very well and where you even get to know your professors, because of the smaller class sizes.
