Consumer Manipulation - Controlling the Behavior of Consumers

Every business is driven by consumers. The behavior of the consumers decides how long a specific business will be on their industry. But today, instead of being dependent on the consumer's behavior, most companies are now manipulating the buying behavior of the consumers.

Consumer manipulation exists to sustain consumerism. Corporations can't afford the fast pacing changes in buying attitude of people. And due to the tough competitions, good marketing alone can't assure a business success.

We usually accept this fact within ourselves before thinking more about it, and we understand that the consumer manipulation is quite unfair. But still, we can't resist the temptation of special deals and impulse shopping. They will mostly show you how you are going to benefit in a certain offer until it gets irresistible, but they will not tell you the strings attached with it.

For example, the printer companies that sells printers in a very low price but attached with it is a locked in subscription on ink refills. Even they loss profit in selling printers in cheap price, they will definitely recover their profit on overpriced ink refills. And not only that, they will also set an electronic expiration dates on cartridge that will make the cartridge unusable after a couple of months even it still has good inks inside.

Another good example for this is the nozzle soaps. Most people don't care how much soaps is being released in soap nozzles, they might not notice how much soaps they are consuming. So they conducted an experiment, they sell large size soap nozzles on some region and a standard size soap nozzles on other regions. As the experiment goes, they got more sales on the region that they sold large size soap nozzles. As a result, most soap manufactures sells large size nozzles to impulse more consumptions on people. Of course, they didn't promote them as large size nozzles instead they label them as "easy to use nozzles".

This nozzles trick is a typical example of consumer manipulation, starts from changing small behavior of mass people. Though, many companies have been caught on nozzle manipulation while other competitions change their nozzles promptly to survive in the industry.

Consumer manipulation is quite tricky and greedy but it is still considered legal, I mean they will make it look like legal through consumer agreements and disclaimers. Corporations will make sure that what they will be doing is legal, though it is unfair for consumers' side.
