Content Management Systems Or Static Websites?

Once you've decided that you or your company requires a website

, the next decision you need to make is which kind? Do you need a simple static website or a Content Management System (CMS)? In this article we will take a look at the prod and cons of each kind.

Static Websites

Pros

These type a of websites are far simpler and quicker to set-up, a good web design company should be able to create a well designed static website within a couple of days.

When designing a static website their are no restrictions, as the design does not have to fit around any sort of framework.

It's cheaper, they are a lot cheaper to build and far easier to maintain.

Cons

If you want to update the website, you will have to go back to your web design company and ask them to do the updates. (This could end up costing more in the long run)

Creating XML site maps has to be done manually.

This way of creating websites in the future will be the least used as content managed websites give you much more flexibility and control over your website.

Content Management Systems

Pros

All of today's popular content management systems will allow you to update your website from any computer with an internet connection.

You can update your websites from your phone.

You can create an unlimited number of pages on your website.

XML site maps are automatically updated.

All the popular content management systems like Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal are Open Source, this means that anybody and everybody contributes to the development, so there is far more support for development of your content managed website.

Cons

More Expensive

Some of the Content Management Systems may have slight restrictions in the way a website can be designed due to the framework of the content management system.

Conclusion

Since I started web designing and development over 7 years ago, I had always created static websites, so I do still have an affection for the way they are designed and created. But for the last 5 years I have been using the popular content management systems, like Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal, these systems give web designers and developers the ability to expand web sites and make them far more interactive and collect valuable data, than a normal static website would allow.

If you are unsure as to which type of web site you or your company may need take these factors in to consideration:

Will you want to add more content?

Do you want your website to rank well on Search Engines?

Do you want to save money in the long term?

Will you want to expand your websites functions and capabilities over time?

If you have answered yes to all the above you need to purchase a content managed website. This may cost you or your company a little more money in the short term, but over the duration of owning this type of website you will definitely save money. As well as saving money you will become more involved with your companies presence on the internet and gain much more knowledge and understanding on how to market your website.
