Convicted Of Criminal Charges, Brooklyn Man Still Maintains He Is Innocent

A Brooklyn man who allegedly posed as his dead mother for years in order to cash her Social Security benefits has been convicted of criminal charges

. The man could have walked free if he would have accepted a plea deal that would have exchanged his time already served for a guilty plea, but according to his criminal defense lawyer, he would not plead guilty to something that he did not do.

Thomas Prusik-Parkin, of Brooklyn, could be sentenced to over 80 years in prison, according to a lawyer with the Brooklyn DA's office. He allegedly stole benefits that were paid to his mother from her death in 2003 until 2009. Much of the conviction hinged on two different videos that the prosecution played for jurors depicting a person in a dress and wig cashing checks at the bank. The person in the videos apparently bore a striking resemblance to Irene Prusik, argued Prusik-Parkin's lawyer, because no one ever even questioned that she was who she said she was. Apparently, jurors agreed with the prosecution that the person in the videos also bore a great resemblance to Thomas Prusik-Parkin.

Prusik-Parkin's lawyer says that the man does not know who was in those videos, but maintains that it was somebody else and not him. The Brooklyn criminal lawyer says that his client did not dress up as a woman and never pretended to be Irene Prusik. The Brooklyn resident did not react when he was found guilty of all the criminal charges, including mortgage fraud, criminal possession of instrument used in forgery, and grand larceny.

Thomas Prusik-Parkin will face sentencing later this month. By maintaining his innocence rather than admitting to something that he says he did not do, it remains to be seen how much of his freedom that cost him. However, most of us can relate to that deep-seated desire to want to defend oneself when falsely accused. In fact, anyone who faces any sort of criminal charge will want to mount the best defense possible.

The best way for those in Brooklyn to defend themselves in criminal court is with the help of a Brooklyn criminal lawyer who will work with you to build the strongest defense possible for your case. Because your lawyer understands all of the legal implications of your criminal charges, your lawyer can offer you legal counsel, explain your options, and advise you as to the best course of action to follow. Your Brooklyn criminal lawyer will also work with you so that you are prepared for any hearings or court appearances at which you might be called upon to appear. Most importantly, your lawyer will protect your rights and your freedoms to arrive at the best outcome for your case.
