To some, cooking is nothing but a burden

To some, cooking is nothing but a burden. This article provides you with suggestions to do just that.

Rubbing stainless steel on your hands before you wash them can get rid of odors such as onions, fish and other strong ingredients. This strips the odors off your hands so that you don't contaminate other ingredients. There are purpose-built steel "soap bars" for this, but the sides of your sink or your spoons will work just as well.

To make your French fries crisper, try leaving the raw potatoes in some cold water for half an hour before you fry them. A cold water soak helps the potatoes stand up to the rigors of deep fat frying.

Brine is a great cooking method. Any poultry can be put in a brine for roughly an hour, to greatly improve the flavors in your meal.

If you are preparing a recipe using dried beans, wait until the beans are soft to add your salt or garlic. Adding these ahead of time will not allow your beans to cook properly, and this will have more importance if your beans are older. Wait to use the seasoning until they have cooked partly to your desired texture.

Every six months to one year, replace spices that have grown dull. Often, spices that have sat upon the shelf for a long period of time lose their pungency. When you know you're not going to be using a spice for a long time, give it away to someone in your family or to a friend before it loses its flavor.

When chopping fresh herbs, try sprinkling a bit of salt over the cutting board before you begin. This gives extra flavor and helps to hold the herbs in place. Remember to use moderation; you don't want to add too much salt to your ingredients. That salt on the board adds some flavor since it sticks to the herbs.

Your spices should be stored in a cool place that is free of light. Exposing spices to heat, humidity, and light will shorten their lifespan. Spices stored in a cool, dark location will taste better and last longer. Better tasting meals are the result of the ingredients you use, including the freshest spices possible.

It can be easier to blend warm milk into mashed potatoes. You will get an airier result than would be possible using chilled milk. Nobody wants to eat mashed potatoes full of lumps.

When you approach cooking in the right way and with the right knowledge, it can prove to be as much fun as consuming the great dishes you create. Add these tips to your cooking bag of tricks, and keep adding new touches to get even better. Your skills will get better and people will bug you to cook for them!
