Cooking With Barbecue Sauce, No Forks Required

The one element of cooking outdoors and having a gathering of friends and family

over the grill is that whatever you are serving will usually not require any utensils to eat. Sure, if you are making a steak you might, but normally anything you slather with barbecue sauce is designed to eat with your hands. If you have side dishes that require a fork, like potato salad, a fork might be optional, but the essence of outdoor cooking is about returning to your primal instincts, and eating without silverware.

Beyond the obvious fruit salad and beans that need a utensil, the big part of enjoying the grilling experience is to be able to relax, be less formal, and eat with the tools God provided you, your hands. The feel of grasping that rib and chomping into it has a certain feel to it. It is somewhat animalistic, and for most guys it feels good. Sure, you may wear a suit to work during the week as you are a mild mannered accountant for a big firm downtown, but on the weekend you are a heathen, a direct descendant of your Cro-Magnon brethren, and you will rip the charred flesh from the bone and leave that barbecue sauce all over your face the rest of the day! That is essence of man at its finest.

This ability to let your hair down and enjoy yourself without limits or set table manners is what helps you recharge for the week of being bunged up in that suit again and held back from your carnal urges. If men do not ingest enough barbecue sauce it has been said by some owners of rib shacks and burger joints that they will go crazy. In this case, the concept of having continual backyard cookouts is the easiest way for him to maintain sanity in this insane world.

So, for all you men who feel restrained in your life of grinding out the typical work week, don't do anything drastic, throw some coals on the grill, slap some meat on the fire, overwhelm that meat with your favorite sauce, and bring over some good friends to share in the caveman experience. Just make sure all the barbecue sauce is off of your face, and sometimes your ears, before you go to work on Monday. Or, if not, wear that dried up splash of sauce as a badge of honor around the office all day letting everyone know you had a good weekend.
