. The Danish capital has stunning architecture evident in the medieval city and most of the attractions are free.

Getting Around

Cycling is the transport of choice even in winter and travelers should enquire at their Copenhagen hostels about the budget-friendly City Bike scheme. It is quicker to travel around the city by bike than by using any other form of transport, and it will save you a great deal of money.

The harbor bus is also a cheap alternative to official canal tours and a great way to view the city from the water.

Attractions

The city's many palaces, museums and historical monuments are great places to visit on a winter's day.

Baroque and modern architecture stand side by side in the city and travelers can look out of their Copenhagen hostel window and see a skyline broken by church and cathedral spires, such as the Church of Our Savior, which can be climbed to the very top.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek contains the personal collection of Carl Christian Hillman Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, and is also worth seeing.

Parks

There are many green spaces in Copenhagen and during the colder months the snow transforms them into a magical winter scene. King's Garden, located in the Rosenborg Castle gardens, is the oldest park in the city and very beautiful during the colder months.

The Botanical Gardens, in the north-east area of Kastellat, is often a peaceful place to wander around and is enjoyed by locals and travelers alike.

Nightlife

Copenhagen has a vibrant jazz scene and travelers fortunate enough to catch a music festival will enjoy some great nights out at very reasonable prices.

Backpackers wandering along Stroget will come across an array of street entertainment in the form of magicians, jugglers and other street performers. A great night out without spending a penny will do wonders for a backpacker's budget.

Tea cafes and traditional restaurants are great places to kick back and enjoy the best of Copenhagen's local produce.
