Coping With Loneliness In Middle Age
In some ways, middle age can be the best time of your life
. Financial independence, a certain degree of confidence, and (hopefully) a long track record of accomplishments can all contribute to a sense of satisfaction that can only come with being middle-aged. However, it is not all wine and roses when you get older, and one of the most crucial issues you will have to deal with is learning how to cope with loneliness.
Coping with loneliness is something that we all learn to some extent at every juncture of our lives. Adults aren't the only people who suffer from loneliness, and it is a common occurrence in adolescents and the elderly as well. Having gone through periods of loneliness in your youth, you should be well equipped to cope with loneliness when you hit your 40s...or so you would think.
The truth is that loneliness takes on a whole new aspect once you reach middle-age. Many of your friends at this point will have relationships of their own, or are in the process of settling down in one. If you suddenly find yourself without a relationship at this point, you may well end up being the odd man-or woman-out. It is then that you will realize that the lessons you learned in your youth with regard to coping with loneliness will come in handy.
So what options do you have for coping with loneliness in middle-age? As in your teens, you still have the option to socialize with your friends, although there are some challenges to doing this when you are older. Few of your friends will have the time to meet up with you for a drink or a night out at a moment's notice, and gone are the days when you can bask in your singlehood all night. Even so, there are many opportunities for you to enjoy each other's company even for an hour or two, and these social occasions can be a great way to cope with loneliness.
Now would also be a good time to pursue some of your own interests that you never had time for in the past. If you have always wanted to build a log cabin-or a shoe rack for that matter-being single is a great time to brush up on your woodworking skills. It is also never too late to learn to play an instrument, and you won't have to worry about anyone telling you to turn it done anymore (well, there are the neighbors of course, but that's an entirely unrelated concern). The point is that you will have a lot more "me time" at your disposal when you are single, and using it productively will go a long way in terms of coping with loneliness.
Of course, loneliness is bound to be too much for you at some point, and even the tried and proven methods may not be of much benefit. If you are having difficulty coping with loneliness in spite of your best efforts, don't disregard the benefits of professional therapy.
