The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB), and is contested by the men's national teams. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years. The next Rugby World Cup will take place in 2011 in New Zealand. The hosts for 2015 and 2019 have been announced as England and Japan respectively.

Italy has competed in all six Rugby World Cups, having made their first appearance in the inaugural 1987 tournament. They have yet to progress past the pool stage on the tournament. Because they finished third in Pool C of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, they automatically qualified to compete in the 2011 tournament in New Zealand.

USA Rugby is the national governing body for the sport of rugby union in the United States of America. It is divided into seven territorial Unions: Mid Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Pacific Coast, Southern California, USA Rugby South and West.
