Cosmetic Surgery With Hip Implants
While most men and women are seeking to slim down the hip area
, there are some patients out there who wish to augment the hips. Although this type of surgery is rarely performed and few plastic surgeons offer it, hip augmentation can be achieved with the placement of implants or fat injections. Here, we review the benefits and potential downsides to each type of hip augmentation surgery.
Hip Implants
It is common for women to enlarge the size of their breasts with saline or silicone implants. Similarly, we have become more accustomed to hearing of patients who have their buttocks augmented with implants. In addition, pec, bicep, and calf implants have been placed in men looking to enhance their figures. So it really shouldn't come as any surprise that patients desire hip implants to produce the shapely, hourglass figure that was so popular in the 50s.
Hip implants are flatter, and more oval shaped than other implants. During surgery, an incision is made just below the hipbone; in most cases the incision will be just three centimeters in length and will heal nicely with proper aftercare. The surgeon creates a pocket below the fascia and above the muscle; the implant is placed in the pocket to produce the desired shape, and then the incision is closed with sutures.
Following cosmetic hip implant surgery, patients are advised to avoid heavy activity and wear a compression garment for one month. The compression garment will help you maintain your new shape, reduce swelling, and aid in overall healing. Strenuous activity should be avoided, as it could cause the stitches to bust, the incision to re-open, and increased inflammation. However, patients should resume some light activity a day or two after surgery. Short, easy walks are recommended for the 30 days following cosmetic hip implant surgery.
Fat Grafting
Fat grafting is another method of augmenting the hips. This approach requires the patient to have an excess amount of fat in another area of the body; unfortunately, many of the patients who wish to undergo hip augmentation are naturally thin and may not have enough extra fat for the grafting procedure. In these cases, the patient's sole option is cosmetic hip implant surgery.
During treatment, the excess fat will be extracted from the stomach, arms, or another area of the body via liposuction. The patient's own fat is then processed so it can be re-injected into a different area of the body. In the case of hip enhancement surgery, the fat would be injected into the area around the hipbone and shaped to create more width.
While the idea of fat grafting is popular among patients who which to augment or add volume to certain areas of the skin or body without the use of a foreign device or product, there are some disadvantages to consider. Fat grafting technology and treatment has not yet been perfected, and the re-injected fat does not always hold its shape or stay in the desired location. The treatment may need to be repeated to achieve the desired width. And often, the injected fat will eventually migrate downwards. Since hip implants offer the surgeon more control over the final results, many patients elect to undergo the implant method of hip augmentation rather than fat grafting.
