Cosmetic surgery: A Brief Background
Throughout the history of the human race, there have always been traces of people pursuing physical improvement
. A testimony to this is the fact that reconstructive surgery is one of the most ancient human practices. Recorded evidences show that as early as 4000 years ago, skin grafts were already being utilized for reconstructive surgical work in India. And although it wasn't until the eighteenth century, during the period of enlightenment and scientific thought that true progress in the field became evident, one can clearly say today that the practice evolved shoulder-to-shoulder with the advancement of human knowledge.
The 19th century gave our race two milestones in the field of plastic surgery; the first was an operation being successfully performed on a British Military Officer who had suffered substantial injuries to his nose in 1814. The other one came a little bit later on 1827, when Dr. John Peter Mettauer performed the first cleft palate operation in the United States, using instruments he designed himself. Thus, the history of plastic surgery began in the country.
The war played a vital role in advancement of reconstructive surgery, as the 1st World War presented physicians with scores of severe facial wounds and burns that needed treatment and much more. Modern weapons used then caused kinds and severity of injuries that were unprecedented in the history of the field. This gave rise to some of the greatest medical talents who devoted themselves fully both to exploring the possibilities of plastic surgery and developing new techniques to ease the burdens carried by the men maimed by war. It was also during this point that surgeons fully realized the influence one's appearance has on his success.
In the United States, the discipline of plastic surgery was jumpstarted with the founding of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS). Prior to its creation in 1931, no organization ever existed for American plastic surgeons. The society's collective work gave rise to many notable developments in the field, of including the recognition of the progress and history of plastic surgery by the American Board of Surgeons. ASPRS members also created the first qualifying exam for plastic surgery in the US. In succeeding years, a number of similar organizations sprang up due to ASPRS's efforts to promote plastic surgery as a discipline and industry in its own right.
The 1960's and 70's set the stage for today's well-known accounts of plastic surgery. The decades saw a number of plastic surgeons awarded for their contributions to the field and rising to prominence, including the post of Surgeon General, and bagging the Nobel Prize. Then, during the 1990s the industry had another growth spurt. Many innovations not just in plastic surgery but in the overall field of aesthetic enhancement took place in the last couple of decades. Among these were non-abrasive liposuctions, breakthrough skin appearance enhancements and other treatments and procedures that allowed a person to alter his appearance and his body.
