Cosmetology Careers - Limitless Choices

They say cosmetologists are born, not created

They say cosmetologists are born, not created. That might be true! Most of the super stars and uber successful stylists started playing with hair way back in daycare! As they grew up it was no wonder that they chose cosmetology careers.

This field offers absolutely limitless futures. One of the greatest perks is that the time needed for study is very low when compared to the huge immediate rewards. A talented stylist can easily hit the $50,000 a year mark, frequently sooner than a four year college graduate.

A cosmetology career allows you to work with hair, skin and nails. The courses will differ by state, but plan on at least 1,000 hours and much as 3,000. It's easy to find out what your state requires just by checking online. Most schools have various programs to offer. You can attend full time days, weekends only, evenings, or part time depending on your own schedule.

Some states want you to have a high school diploma, others don't. Other than that, there are no prerequisites. Check your state's website for details.

After you graduate you will be required to take your state board exam which includes a written part and a practical part - hands on testing. For the practical part you actually have to bring a person with you who is willing to have her hair washed and styled using all sorts of product, gel, goo, etc. Each person will be asked to perform different procedures. You will never need to cut or color someone's hair during your test although you might be asked to "prepare" your client for the procedure which would include draping, sectioning hair, etc.

After you get your license you must now work as an apprentice for a few years, under someone with a Class II license. Find a salon that offers training. Don't settle for some tiny salon that only wants to take advantage of you as you shampoo hair and clean. You need to hone your skills, and this won't help.

After all that, the sky's the limit. You can specialize in coloring and make a small fortune. Head to Hollywood and work with the stars, or even open your own shop. Some stylists go into teaching and work for big names like Sassoon and Paul Mitchell, traveling all over the world.
