Costume capers: a guide to dressing up this Yuletide

Whether you like fancy dress or not, the time will come when that invite will drop through your letterbox or into your inbox requesting your attendance at a special themed' party night.

For some, the alarm bells start to ring: What am I going to wear'? For others, the invite is a call to action and time to get the creative juices on free-flow. Imagination and creativity certainly goes a long way in the world of fancy dress.

But not everyone is blessed with the skills of a Savile Row tailor or a cat-walk designer. Indeed, most people don't have the skills or, perhaps, the desire to go to any great length to dress and impress.

Luckily, there are many costume ideas that are good to go' and will help anyone look the part, with little more than a few minutes surfing' time on the internet and a debit or credit card.

Halloween may be the peak period for fancy dress parties, but Christmas isn't all that far behind in terms of themed parties'. School, colleges and universities are on holiday for anything up to a month, whilst countless workers across the country take a fortnight's rest'. People tend to be in the mood for partying.

Countless charity Santa runs' take place across the UK around Christmas time, where participants dress up as Santa and run up to 5km, all in the name of a very worthwhile cause. For fancy dress costumes, Santa Claus is probably too obvious a choice of character in terms of parties, so you may wish to rethink your plans of going as Saint Nick if you want to retain a smidgen of originality.

For those who wish to show their disdain of Christmas without being a party pooper, then why not go dressed as Scrooge? Or better still, Dr. Seuss's The Grinch', the infamous grouch that vies to steal' Christmas?

If you want to be a little more positive, then how about going dressed as a reindeer or elf? But if you really want to go the extra mile and be original, go dressed as a Christmas tree, snowman or kit yourself out as a sexy Santa's Helper'.

The thing to keep in mind with any themed party is that you have to make at least a little effort, even if you're not someone who normally likes to dress-up. So even if you're a Christmas Scrooge you can get involved and show your feelings whilst keeping in with the spirit of things. Christmas comes once a year, so don't say Bah, humbug' unless you're in costume, of course.
