Fashion Or Function In The Most Expensive Shoes

The world shoe industry is a massive industry, and for years, consumers have been spending increasing amounts of money on the most expensive running shoes. Although expensive footwear was once a category populated mostly by women's fashionable high heels, the category is now flooded with athletic offerings, and in particular, some of the most expensive running shoes are sold to men in particular.

Some fashion columnists estimate that men like to wear high price athletic footwear because it allows them to look great while simultaneously looking like they are not trying to look great. Every year in American, men spend almost 10 billion dollars on athletic footwear. An expensive athletic shoe that is classified as a shoe that costs $100 or more represent almost three quarters of a million dollars of sales yearly. However, considering that youth basketball high tops in the early nineties carried $100 price tags, $100 may not seem like that much to pay for a shoe for many people.

The most expensive pairs are those that have been sold at auction. For instance, the ones that the basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain wore during the game where he set the record for scoring the most points in a single game were sold at auction, and they sold for $55,000. Nike will often make custom orders that are only available for a select group of people at a certain event, and these pairs tend to be well over $1,000.

Some of the high prices shoes are actually designed to be worn while exercising like those ones made by Nike and New Balance. Other companies like Prada, Adidas, and the Swiss company Bally make designs that can be worn for runs or workouts but are better suited to wearing for a night on the town. Notable shoemakers have their name behind at least one high priced pair. For instance, the Converse Company which has become well known for their Chuck Taylors that retail for about $40 has also made an art shoe. A Chuck Taylor is sent to a village in Mexico, decorated by children in the village, and then sold for a few hundred dollars. The Converse Company donates the money back to the children's art program.

Although research on whether buying the most expensive shoes will provide you any more comfort is dubious, it is thought that the pricey ones tend to retain their cushioning longer than cheaper ones and thus are worth the extra money. However, even if they are not bought for durability, it is certain that they are fashionable.
