Could This Signal The Beginning Of The End For Wikipedia?

Wikipedia has become one of the largest sites on the planet

. The site offers information about almost every subject that is available and has been going strong for years. A lot of wikis traffic comes from direct searches and Google listings. In Google's eyes wiki is the ultimate power horse for information and that has been displayed by numerous number one rankings for highly competitive key terms.

But could 2009-2010 be the year that the Wikipedia falls to the cruel world of the internet? The wiki for a long time has been relying on users generating and moderating the content so that they can expand there site and build upon their business model, but recent research for 2009 has indicated that almost fifty thousand editors if not more perhaps, ditched the site in the first few month of the year.

But why are these people leaving? And why is the Wiki getting abandoned? Let's have a look at a few reasons as to why this may be occurring.

Hostility

Whereas wiki used to be a great place to edit and get your voice heard, there are now more and more editors just changing things that they believe are incorrect and not accurate, when in fact it is just another editor's opinion.

Time is Money

As we know we are just slowly slowly coming out of one of the biggest credit crisis's that we have been in for a long time, therefore people are being a lot more cautious with how they actually spend their time, as time in the end equals money and if people are not earning the money that they need to be earning, then they will not do anything for free.

Not Fun

In the beginning adding content to the wiki was fun and exciting, but the site is getting more and more competitive. Besides this there is now also a new era of sites called social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where people would much rather spend their free time.

Do not get me wrong the Wiki is still going to be around for a vast amount of time and many more years to come, but this maybe indicating an end to an era as we currently know it online. The fact is that people want more and more information and real time interaction and the wiki is not doing that and not improving itself, while the competition is.
