There is a common myth that pervades our world about exercise which encourages older people to become less active

. We believe that the older you get the less exercise you need. Many older people themselves have negative attitudes about exercise and fitness as survey results show that older people:

believe their need for exercise reduces and eventually disappears

over-rate the benefits of light, sporadic non-intentional exercise

under-rate their own strength, abilities and capacities


believe they get enough exercise even when they do no exercise at all

The studies also showed fitness awareness is lowest amount the less well educated, woman and older people. This is a shame as perhaps as much as one-half of the functional declines associated with the aging process are in fact the results of disuse, of inactivity and years of living a sedentary lifestyle.

The World Health Organization estimates that between 60-85 percent of people internationally lead sedentary lifestyles. They are now calling this a disease in itself as it has now been recognized that it accounts for nine out of ten of the leading causes of death in our modern world.

This downward spiral can be in fact be reversed through an effective program of strength training exercise which is exciting as it means we need not think of ourselves as captives of the fearful aging process. Instead an opportunity exists for each one of us to prevent the decline in all areas of health and function. Whether we like it or not lifelong programs of muscle strengthening exercise to preserve our strength and maintain our physical abilities is what is needed.

Being strong and fit means being able to live a full life doing all the things you need to do and want to do. This provides a huge sense of independence and self-esteem. If you continue to not do enough muscle building and maintaining exercise (six out of ten people don't) you will lose 15-25 pounds of muscle tissue as you get older. This is what will accelerate the decline of your ability to perform the required and desired tasks and activities of daily living. When you cannot do this anymore nursing home here we come.


The human body functions best when it is active and strong and just 2-3 sessions each week with the right exercise can ensure you do stay strong and healthy. Do not fall for the notion that a bit of walking or gardening is all the activity needed. This is misleading and incorrect. You need to do more than that and need to work your major muscle groups through their ranges of motion under a load which is what strength training achieves quickly and easily.

Make sure you get your program set up and you are shown what you need to do. Have a fitness professional do this for you at your local gym or fitness center so you can get the most benefit from your program.

Take it upon yourself not to allow inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle to slowly but surely erode your health away. You need to keep that for your whole lifespan but it is up to you to protect it as no one else can do it for you. But it will be worth it - there is nothing more certain than that.
