Counter top r filters are available for between $50.00 and $300 and are easily installed as a DIY project. This type of system sits on top of a countertop and is connected to the water supply or faucet closest to it.

The way they work is by holding a supply of water separate from what comes from the tap. That way you can have a supply of clean drinking water but do not need to filter dish washing water or cooking water unless you choose to. With a countertop filter you also do not lose any of the normal water pressure you can sometimes lose when using an under sink filter and you will not use as many filters as with a faucet mounted unit because there is no need to filter every drop of water that is used.

A quality countertop filter will use several types of filter systems to clean the water. This includes a combination of absorption filters as well as particulate filters. You may be able to use a less expensive countertop system that only uses one type of filter but you really should have your water tested to decide which filter is the one you need the most.

Particulate filters, also known as micro filters or mechanical filters, remove things like sand,some pathogens and bacteria.While carbon based absorption filters are more useful to remove chlorine and other things like pesticides. Removing the chlorine alone will improve the smell and taste of your water.

The big disadvantage to a countertop water filter system is space. This system requires counter space and for those who have very little counter space that can be a problem.

There are many advantages to the use of a countertop system, clean drinking water, ease of installation and high capacity filters to name a few but if space is an issue for you it may be time to look into an under sink filter system.
