Many of us know courgette as an ingredient in the famous French dish Ratatouille. However, not much is known about its origins or how it came to popularity. This is partly due to the fact that the history of this fruit is unclear. Let me shed some light on this topic and share with you the history of courgette.

It is said that the courgette originated from Mexico around seven thousand years ago. Based on the findings of archeologists, the fruit developed or evolved from the giant pumpkin. This happened between 7000 and 5000 BC. Around 500 years ago, the great crusader Christopher Columbus brought the fruit from Mexico to the Mediterranean. However, before the 20th century, courgettes weren't very popular and not at all widely used in Europe and the United States. This soon changed with the help of the writings of Elizabeth David. From her writings, the British came to know the courgette and its versatile applications.

Today, courgette is very popular in Italy and is locally known as Zucchino. It is still widely used in Mexican cuisine. It is actually a part of their food trio: beans, maize and squash. This pre-Columbian food trio is referred to as three sisters.

Apart from its popularity in restaurant kitchens, courgettes have also risen in popularity in home gardeners. Home gardeners have found this plant to be very productive. This is because the more it is harvested, the more fruit is produces.

Courgette has a long and rich history which has crossed wide oceans. Its popularity continues to rise. And its application continues to widen.
