Court Interpreters
First of all when we ponder on the topic of who is a court interpreter
, than we will find that many are still not aware of this concept. The best way to explain it is, as we see that the communication in courtroom proceedings is often more complex than that in other settings or in everyday life and so the language skills are prized in courts. But this is not at all a new concept for it was mostly prevalent at the time of world wars as tribunal setup by the English countries in Germany and Italy to furnish justice to the people there and hence the judges were also English so there used to be a need for court interpreter in order to establish communication between judge and the accused.
Very well qualified interpreters in court sessions help to ensure that justice is carried out fairly for defendants and other stakeholders. Interpreters work allows defendants to hear the evidence, assist in their own defence, confront witnesses, and communicate effectively with court staff during court proceedings and trials. Basically a court interpreter translates court hearings from English to another language and also translates them back from other languages to English. In this way they help to bridge the communication gap.
Their job profile is not limited, it does hold a wide arena of various aspects involved in a court proceeding:-
1. Firstly, they interpret communications for defendants, defence witnesses, and other parties with limited English skills, and help them to understand and communicate with the court, counsel, and probation/pre-trial services officers.
2. Secondly, they provide their interpreting services when necessary in all criminal proceedings as well as civil cases.
3. Thirdly, they also provide sight translations of relevant court forms and other important documents.
4. Fourthly, they serve as a resource to judges and senior managers in matters concerning language and culture.
The demand and requirements of a court interpreter is very high, because there are so many languages and so many democracies surviving and practising law and order. In this case being a bilingual may only provide an average income to an interpreter, who is rendering his interpreting services.
The court system provides a number of different opportunities for court interpreters. Court interpreters may be employees of the Unified Court System or they may serve as per-diem independent contractors.
Also, the need in various languages from English, Spanish, and Mexican to the sign languages has boosted up the opportunities in this sector. There are also masters and vocational courses present which provide a proper certification. These courses bring professionalism in the people and improvise their skills.
The interpreting services of the court interpreters have largely helped the deaf and hearing impaired litigants. They have also helped in family hearings and have provided a big help in the cases involving children and the cases of domestic violence in which sometimes a person really finds it difficult to express the wrong happening which took place.
Hence an interpreter plays a very-very important role in facilitating communication between two people who cannot relate ordinarily and above all a court interpreter does not only enable a court to make decision but also can play a very important role in facilitating legal awareness amongst people who do not understand the language of the court.
